Elizabeth Futral has established herself as one of the major coloratura sopranos in the world today. She has embraced a diverse repertoire that includes Händel, Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi, Glass, Previn, Saariaho and Ricky Ian Gordon.

Her 2014-15 season began with San Antonio Opera in a new production of Tobias Picker’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr. Fox. She reprised her role of Miss Hedgehog with Odyssey Opera in Boston for a staged concert version and recording of the work. Elizabeth sang Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with Opera Roanoke and Mahler’s 4th Symphony on the same concert. She reprised Mahler’s 4th with Charleston Symphony and St. Petersburg Opera in November and December respectively. Also on the Charleston concert was her rendition of Strauss’ Four Last Songs with her husband Steven White conducting. Elizabeth gave a recital with pianist Myra Huang at Washington and Lee University in November, as well. The remainder of this season includes Mimi (La Bohème) with Opera Birmingham, a recital at LSU School of Music, Previn’s Honey and Rue with Pacific Symphony and La Voix Humaine and Pagliacci with Opera Columbus.

The 2013-14 season began and ended with world premieres for Elizabeth. She sang Vera Donovan in Picker’s Dolores Claiborne for San Francisco Opera and Alice B. Toklas in Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27 for Opera Theatre St. Louis. In between, Elizabeth made her role debut as Zdenka in Arabella for Minnesota Opera and reprised Lucia for Portland Opera. She also enjoyed her musical theatre experiences as Desirée Armfeldt in A Little Night Music at Houston Grand and as Elsa Schraeder in Sound of Music at Lyric Opera Chicago.

Following a busy summer of 2012 singing Marian Paroo in The Music Man for Glimmerglass Opera and Saariajo’s Emilie for Lincoln Center Festival Elizabeth began the 2012-13 season. After touring to Muscat, Oman with Glimmerglass Opera in October Elizabeth spent much time on the concert circuit in the fall of 2012. She was heard in D.C. with Washington Bach Consort in November as well as with the Grand Rapids Symphony in music of Stephen Paulus. Also in November she appeared at New York’s Weill Hall singing music of Philip Lasser. In December Elizabeth sang songs of Jacob Druckman with the New York Philharmonic on their Contact series. January through March she was seen at Lyric Opera Chicago as Musetta in La Bohème.

Revisiting the role of Nedda in I Pagliacci, Elizabeth made her debut with New Zealand Opera in August and September of 2011. In November, 2011, she reprised the role of Violetta in La Traviata for Lyric Opera Baltimore’s first season with her husband Steven White conducting. She was heard at Carnegie Hall November 30 and December 1, 2011 as she performed music of Kaija Saariaho with the Avanti Chamber Group. The Performing Arts Society Acadiana presented Elizabeth in recital in Lafayette, LA in January after which she sang her first Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte for Washington National Opera.
In the 2010-11 season Elizabeth sang Thaïs for Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile. She toured as recitalist in New York, Birmingham, AL, and Washington, DC. For Florida Grand Opera she debuted as all the heroines in Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann after which she was Violetta for Minnesota Opera. The season ended with the U.S. premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s Emilie for Spoleto USA in Charleston, SC.
The season spanning 2008-9 showcased Elizabeth opening Washington National Opera’s season as Violetta in La Traviata and visiting Oviedo, Spain to sing Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress. She sang Violetta at Deutsche Opera Berlin and Thais for Athens Concert Hall in Athens, Greece. Houston Grand Opera premiered Andre Previn’s Brief Encounter and Elizabeth starred alongside Nathan Gunn. Washington Concert Opera presented her in a little-known Mercadante opera Il Giuramento and she closed out the season as Violetta for Los Angeles Opera and San Francisco Opera.

She began the 2007-8 season with the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Violetta in La Traviata. She will also appear with Pittsburgh Opera, Indianapolis Symphony, and New Orleans Opera for their New Year’s Eve gala. She will give a recital at Julliard with Margo Garrett and sing concerts with Minneapolis Symphony and Long Beach Opera. Later in the season she will appear with San Diego Opera and Fort Worth Opera.

In the 2006-7 season she returned to Vancouver Opera for a concert performance of I Puritani, the Metropolitan Opera for the world premiere of Tan Dun’s new opera The First Emperor and I Puritani, New York City Opera for Semele, and Baltimore Opera for L’assedio di Corinto. This summer she made her debut in Vienna at the historic Teater an der Wien for Le Nozze di Figaro.

In the fall of 2005 Ms. Futral performed Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus and Euridice as part of Great Performers at Lincoln Center. That season also included Adina in L’elisir d’amore for Washington National Opera and Violetta in La Traviata for Los Angeles Opera. Other highlights of past seasons include La traviata with Berlin State Opera; Rigoletto at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona; Elvira in I Puritani with the Baltimore Opera; the title role in Daphne with the New York City Opera; Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier with Los Angeles Opera; touring to Japan with the Bayerische Staatsoper as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro conducted by Zubin Mehta; the Brahms Requiem and Krenek’s Die Nachtigall with the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas; Lucia di Lammermoor with Dallas Opera conducted by Richard Bonynge, and with Teatro Municipal in Santiago; and Curley’s Wife in Of Mice and Men with Houston Grand Opera. Recitals have included visits to Chicago, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Los Alamos, NM, and Philadelphia.

Ms. Futral’s extensive discography includes Meyerbeer’s L’Etoile du nord for Marco Polo, Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire, and Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges conducted by Maestro Previn for Deutsche Grammophon, and Philip Glass’s Hydrogen Jukebox for Euphorbia Records. She has recorded Rossini’s Otello and Zelmira and Pacini’s Carlo di Borgogna for Opera Rara as well as Mozart, The Supreme Decorator for that label, Lucia di Lammermoor and a solo aria recital for Chandos as part of their “Opera in English” series. Ms. Futral can also be heard on Sweethearts, a collection of operetta favorites on Newport Classics.
